Helvetikone Reviews

Groove #85 (1203/01 04)

Gelungen! (Thaddi)

More striking Digital Gadget business here, following on from last week’s incredible debut from Bogger. Heading in an altogether more frayed trajectory, Helvetikone might best be described as the meeting point between the abrasive mechanical-funk of Skam’s Mr.76 with more Berlin-School technoid modifications, a la Monolake. Spread among the 8 tracks/30 minutes here are some real killers, from the stumbling hiccup hip-hop of the ruthlessly dark “Wrecked” to the slowly decaying breaks of “Before”, it’s been a really long time since we’ve heard anything this good within this increasingly confined generic arena – if you’re into classic Skam, or the more industrial, appocalyptic edge of Gescom/Autechre – this really will make your day. Heavy.

Now, get ready for some serious shizzle here! This label has quit literally sprung out of nowhere and delivered 3 of the best releases of the year so far. Hailing from Germany they're putting out some truly gnarly Electronica / Techno sounds that come acorss as a blend of Monolake, Sleeparchive and some of the earlier, heavier Schematic releases. If that sounds like a bit of an oblique reference you seriously need to check this out for yourself to experience some of the heaviest, roughest sounds around. Get in there now and you can say you were there at the beginning. Highly, highly recommended.

Raveline #12 (1203)
Helvetikone is the alias of Eduard Müller, the latest Ableton programmer to step from the shadows onto vinyl. Based in Berlin and previously known for his work in the duo taktik he has delivered a truly exciting debut. Eight tracks of very dark, sampled and fast paced IDM. The production and eye to detail is as you would expect from someone with his background. In fact there are so many nice touches and layers of sound it's the classic grower that you'll keep getting more out of, like is that really a Chuck D sample I just heard? A quality release. (SR)

[...] Helvetikone give us heavy beats, with slightly chaotic sounds over them. Borrowing from different dance styles, Helvetikone is able to create pleasant and danceable tracks. The tracks somehow are very clean, and have been put together really well. Sometimes in my eyes a little too short. And at some point the tracks become a little bit too much of the same over and over again. But luckily the good sounds and the good composition of the songs keep it interesting enough to listen to this record till the end without skipping through tracks. A nice release. Nothing too new, but simply a good and enjoyable release, that will keep the fans of experimental dance music entertained for some time. Well worth a listen. (BVG)

Nice debut for this band and this label, both from Berlin. Between fast breaks, small samples, techno beats and some IDM feeling, here is a 12" whose description sound far stranger than the actual music. Quite broken but dancey and nicely done.

New on Digital Gadget here's an album by Helvetikone. This sounds quite impressive. Its crazed electronica with some fucking squelchy beats and distorted sampled voices. The antithesis of wimptronica.
